1200 people are still gathered this Sunday, August 3rd for a rave party between the towns of Lens-Lestang and Le Grand-Serre in the Drôme. While the second night passed «peacefully», the mayor is concerned about the environmental consequences of this event taking place in a protected natural area.

This area located between the towns of Lens-Lestang and Le Grand-Serre in the Drôme has been hosting a rave party for two days and two nights, which forcefully settled in the night from Friday to Saturday.
The ravers had planned to welcome new guests during this second night, increasing their number to 5000. This did not happen. «This second night was calm,» confirms Lens-Lestang Mayor François Faure.
One hundred gendarmes are mobilized to block access and secure the area. «Without violence,» confirms the mayor. Only a few people managed to infiltrate through the forest.
The first ravers arrived on Friday night around 11:30 pm and stoned two gendarmerie vehicles trying to prevent access to the site, confirming information from Ici Drôme Ardèche (formerly France Bleu). Reinforcements from neighboring units in Valence, Crest, Lyon, and even Antibes, as well as the departmental road safety squadron, had to intervene.
The prefect of the department states that around twenty fines were issued for insurance or driver’s license defects, driving under the influence of drugs, or without a license. On Sunday, August 3rd, in the early morning, the impound lot was present on site to tow offending vehicles.
According to the Drôme prefecture, the rave party is expected to end on Sunday evening around 10 pm.
If law enforcement has been able to limit incidents related to this wild event, environmental consequences are to be feared, according to the mayor, beyond the noise pollution caused. «It is a protected natural area (ZNIEFF: Natural Zone of Ecological, Floristic, and Faunistic Interest, editor’s note). There are protected animals, protected plants, and even flowers like orchids,» emphasizes François Faure.
«Moreover, the village is located on a hillside further down, and when pastures are devastated by rainy events, as is increasingly the case in recent years, water no longer seeps into the grass and flows through the village bringing back mud, rocks, etc.,» adds the mayor, who will have to organize waste collection at the expense of the municipality and its taxpayers.
These difficulties add to the problems of farmers who see their pastures ravaged and must seek other places to graze their animals.
The ravers claim to simply come to enjoy themselves without bothering anyone. «The houses are two or three kilometers away, and people don’t hear anything,» assures one of them. «It’s in the middle of nowhere,» adds his neighbor. And then, «there are times when the participants pick up the trash.»
The two men are no strangers to rave parties and claim that the organization is making every effort to leave the place clean. They conclude in the same way: «This event does not have a major impact, no more than the nearby wind turbines.»
According to the mayor of Lens-Lestang, these gatherings are regular. «Every year, it’s more or less in the same place. Here, it’s hidden so convenient, and often the gendarmes discover the facts after they have occurred,» adds the mayor.
In the Drôme, rave parties have been banned since June 3, 2025, until September 1st. The prefecture made this decision by decree last May due to the numerous gatherings of this type organized in the department since 2021. They have led to numerous offenses and posed a danger to participants.

Le maire de Lens-Lestang s’inquiète des conséquences environnementales de cet événement, soulignant les dommages potentiels sur la faune et la flore locales. Les agriculteurs locaux sont également affectés par les dégâts causés à leurs pâturages. Malgré les affirmations des participants selon lesquelles ils veillent à la propreté du site, le maire souligne les impacts néfastes de ces rassemblements récurrents dans la région.
Les rave parties sont régulièrement organisées dans cette zone, souvent à l’insu des autorités. Malgré l’interdiction des rave parties dans la Drôme jusqu’au 1er septembre prochain, ces événements continuent de se produire, mettant en péril l’environnement et la tranquillité des habitants. En raison des nombreux rassemblements festifs organisés dans le département depuis 2021, la préfecture a pris la décision en mai dernier, par arrêté, d’interdire la circulation de véhicules transportant du matériel utilisé pour des rassemblements festifs non autorisés. Ces rassemblements ont entraîné de nombreuses infractions et représentaient un danger pour les participants.
