Jasper Philipsen is the winner of this first stage! On Saturday, July 5, the riders set off from the esplanade of the Champ de Mars to complete a challenging course around the capital of Flanders before returning to cross the finish line in Lille.

Several crashes occurred during this first stage: at the top of Mont Cassel, Benjamin Thomas and Mattéo Vercher, in the lead, were competing for the best climber point, when Benjamin Thomas fell, dragging his competitor with him. They both got back up without harm, but were caught up by the peloton. Both riders still finished on the podium at the finish, the first to wear the polka dot jersey for best climber and Vercher to receive the Combativity Prize.

Another crash, with more serious consequences, was that of Italian Filippo Ganna, resulting in the first abandonment of the 2025 Tour de France. One of the favorites for the time trial fell 132 km from the finish and took some time to get up, visibly dazed, and eventually abandoned.

This mostly flat stage, except for the climbs at Notre-Dame de Lorette, Ablain-Saint-Nazaire (Pas-de-Calais) peaking at 165 m, Mont Cassel (144 m) and Mont Noir (143 m) at kilometer 140, provided sprinters with a great opportunity to shine, while the northern public, who came in large numbers, ensured a festive atmosphere throughout the route.

With this victory, Jasper Philipsen takes the very first yellow jersey of this 112th edition, setting the stage perfectly for the days ahead. Tomorrow, the peloton will head towards Boulogne-sur-Mer, starting from Lauwin-Planque, for a second stage that already promises new twists and turns.
