Un orage «d’une violence rare» a touché le village thermal de Saint-Honoré-les-Bains, dans la Nièvre, mardi 26 août. 770 campeurs ont été pris dans la tempête, une personne a été mortellement blessée. Christelle, mère de deux filles, témoigne.
«It’s miraculous that there weren’t more injuries.» The emotion can still be heard in Christelle’s voice, a mother of two daughters. This vacationer, who was staying at the camping site in Saint-Honoré-les-Bains, spent the night in the municipal gymnasium after enduring the violent storm that hit the town around 5 p.m. on Tuesday, August 26. A 49-year-old camper was killed by falling tree branches.

«We were caught off guard», she says. «We didn’t have any information, we just knew that the weather forecast was calling for rain.» Indeed, on that Tuesday, Nièvre was only on yellow alert and the forecasts predicted gusts of around 40 km/h. But the very localized storm that hit the village was much more violent than expected.
«When the rain started falling, with hail and wind, I was with my little one, we went to take refuge in the tent. And there, the tent started moving in all directions. Things started falling on us. I was hit on the head, so I told my daughter: ‘Let’s get out quickly’, we went to take refuge in the restrooms», Christelle continues.
The storm only lasted about ten minutes. But once it was over, the landscape was apocalyptic, explains the vacationer.
I saw a huge branch on my tent. Behind it, there were huge trees that had fallen.
«I found out that my neighbor had been seriously injured», she adds. A few hours after the interview, we received confirmation that this 49-year-old woman, transported to the Dijon University Hospital in a desperate state, unfortunately did not survive her injuries.

«It was a disaster», Christelle continues, still in shock. «There were tents under the trees and we didn’t know if there were children underneath. The children were very scared, they weren’t necessarily with their parents when it happened.»
Many parents wondered if their children were still alive…
Before the firefighters and the campground manager arrived on the scene, the victims acted quickly. «The young people sprang into action to check under the tents, dads took out their chainsaws to clear the debris…»
The day after the events, she also questions the state of the campground’s trees. «It’s concerning to see all these trees on the ground with such dry roots. These are trees that were clearly ready to fall…» Elle conclut : «Il est miraculeux qu’il n’y ait pas plus de blessés.»
Christelle, mère de deux filles, partage son témoignage. Quelques heures après l’entrevue, nous avons reçu la confirmation que la femme de 49 ans, qui avait été transportée dans un état critique au CHU de Dijon, n’a malheureusement pas survécu à ses blessures.
«C’était un désastre», a partagé Christelle, encore sous le choc. «Il y avait des tentes sous les arbres et on ne savait pas s’il y avait des enfants en dessous. Les enfants ont eu très peur, ils n’étaient pas forcément avec leurs parents quand c’est arrivé.»
Beaucoup de parents se sont demandé si leurs enfants étaient en vie… Avant l’arrivée des pompiers et du gérant sur les lieux, les sinistrés ont agi rapidement. «Les jeunes se sont mobilisés pour vérifier sous les tentes, des papas ont utilisé leurs tronçonneuses pour dégager les débris…»
Le lendemain de l’incident, elle s’est également interrogée sur l’état des arbres du camping. «C’est inquiétant de voir tous ces arbres tombés avec des racines si sèches. Ces arbres semblaient prêts à chuter… C’est un miracle qu’il n’y ait pas eu plus de blessés», a-t-elle conclu.
