The facade of the house of a couple, prison guards at Liancourt prison in Oise, caught fire in the night from Monday, May 5 to Tuesday, May 6. Only the woman was present during the fire, but she was not injured. She was reportedly awakened by the firefighters, alerted by another couple living on the upper floor of the house. The incident occurred between midnight and 2 a.m. A window was allegedly broken to throw in a flammable substance.

The public prosecutor of Beauvais describes it as a «fire starting» and mentions that a «strong smell of gasoline was detected on this facade«. In a statement, he stated that an investigation has been opened for «destruction of property by a dangerous means to persons, committed due to the quality of persons entrusted with public authority«, confirming a report from the Courrier Picard. The investigation has been entrusted to the research division of the gendarmerie company in Clermont.

According to union representatives, there is no doubt that the incident is related to the profession of the tenants. «We must not turn a blind eye. The thugs, whether outside or inside our walls, have declared war on the police,» said Joris Ledoux, regional representative of UNSA prison staff. «We know that we have a risky job, but a line has been crossed here.» He also mentioned that the couple is «very shocked, devastated«.

In a statement, Ufap-Unsa Justice referred to it as an «attempted homicide«, stating that without the intervention of the firefighters, «we would have had a human tragedy to mourn«.

On Facebook, the FO Justice union also expressed support for the couple of guards.

The prison guards at Liancourt prison went on strike this Tuesday morning and organized a «dead prison» operation, meaning they only provided the minimum service and only one walk took place today for the inmates. Joris Ledoux, however, assures that «the hierarchy has taken the matter seriously, everyone is supportive, from the simple guard to the highest levels of management«.

Several prison guards at Liancourt have reportedly been subjected to intimidation in recent weeks. The car of a guard was also tagged in front of their home with the inscription «DDPF», which stands for «Rights of French Prisoners». This event is part of a wave of violence against prison guards across France. The DDPF symbol has been spotted multiple times in April when several prisons were targeted. An agent at Amiens prison (Somme) also experienced vandalism at their home.

According to Joris Ledoux, many measures need to be implemented to enhance the security of guards. He mentions, in particular, the jamming of telephone lines within prison facilities. «Unfortunately, we know that many phones circulate in prison, so it is quite easy for a detainee to signal to someone outside that a guard will be leaving at a certain time and they should follow,» he explains. He also states that «some guards carefully check in the rearview mirror to ensure they are not being followed or take alternate routes home«.
