«Given what is happening in the world, we feel that prices will increase even more,» anticipates Anne, «while we have nothing to do with the Ayatollah or the closure of the Strait of Hormuz,» she smiles.

After several weeks of calm on the fuel front, the fear of a new price spike is rekindled among most motorists.

Four days after the start of the war in the Middle East, the first effects are being felt in the city of Lille (North). Fuel prices have increased by about ten cents. While the queues have dissipated, anger and a sense of injustice dominate among motorists, who fear a new surge.

It is the fourth day of the war in the Middle East and a first consequence is already visible in France. On the fuel price boards in Lille, all the motorists interviewed share the same observation. «Of course, it has increased,» grumbles a motorist.

Some, like Anne, seem resigned. «Iran or not, it’s been like this for years, prices vary, that’s how it is… We have no choice,» analyzes this woman in her forties, at the wheel of her company vehicle. «Others are more impacted than me,» she admits.

At the counter, an employee has just started his shift. He already notices changes in consumer behavior. «Two days ago, there were more people. Some people were anticipating a shortage I think. But now, it’s back to normal. There are no more queues, but there is anger,» he observes behind his cash register. According to him, prices have been increasing mechanically for two days.

A sentiment shared by Patrick. Joystick in hand, he keeps his eyes fixed on the meter and sarcastically says, «58 euros today,» the amount of his fuel tank. This retiree is used to noting each of his expenses in a small notebook. He checks the increase.

During his last visit to the pump two weeks ago, the price of SP 95 was €1.62 per liter. This Wednesday, March 4, it stands at €1.74. «It’s 12 cents since my last fill-up.»

For this resident of the city, it is less the exact price of the fuel that angers him, than the feeling of paying a bill that is beyond his control. «It’s like the black market, they make people pay for their geopolitical decisions. It doesn’t concern us, but we have to foot the bill. There is injustice. The war has barely started and they are already making us pay for the increases. It’s dishonest,» analyzes Patrick.

The sense of injustice seems to be exacerbated by the incomprehension of a war thousands of kilometers away from this Lille gas station.
