Following the earthquake, the provisional toll reports hundreds of deaths. As the news trickles in, the situation is causing concern within the Burmese community living in the Paris region.
She tries to contact her brother and mother, who remained in Burma, after the violent earthquake that occurred on Friday in Southeast Asia. Solène Khinzinamin, president of the Burmese Community of France (CBF), is worried. «The day there was the earthquake, my mother’s building collapsed,» recounts this resident of Deuil-la-Barre, in Val-d’Oise.
«There is no drinking water, there is no electricity, and it is 37 degrees,» she reports, mentioning the smell of corpses under the rubble.
On the ground, the situation is chaotic. «There are places we have not yet accessed because of damaged roads, destroyed bridges,» describes Helena Ranchal, director of international operations at Doctors of the World, who is appealing for donations to send teams and medical supplies.
She laments «an already very fragile healthcare system.» With her association, Solène Khinzinamin is considering a solidarity gathering on April 27th.
A report by Norbert Cohen and Guillaume Le Guic.
