What happened on Monday in front of the Louis-Armand high school in Yerres, Essonne, where a 17-year-old adolescent was fatally stabbed in a neighborhood brawl? «I beg the youth of Yerres, from here, from Brunoy, and from other neighborhoods, because we are in an area where there are brawls and rivalries between gangs, (…) not to add to the tragedy,» said Mayor Olivier Clodong to the press in front of the school before classes started.

The mayor, who has «a thought first and foremost for this young man» who was killed, provided details about the circumstances of the deadly brawl in which «a group from the Hautes-Mardelles neighborhood of the city of Brunoy and then a group of young people from the Tournelles neighborhood» in Yerres clashed amidst «insults» exchanged on social media.

«Approximately twenty individuals (…) gathered here, behind, near the high school (…) and in the fight, there was a stabbing. One of the young people was armed with a knife and stabbed in the back,» further detailed the mayor who mentioned «about fifteen» young people involved. After the incident, «the night was calm even though a few young people were lurking,» he told AFP.

An investigation for voluntary homicide and assault in a group has been opened, and six suspects have been arrested, said the public prosecutor of Évry, Grégoire Dulin, to AFP.

The victim, originally from the Hautes-Mardelles neighborhood of Brunoy, was stabbed around 5 pm while in front of the Louis-Armand vocational high school in Yerres, where he was not a student, the magistrate said, confirming information from the newspaper Le Parisien. According to initial findings of the investigation, this death occurred in the context of a confrontation between rival gangs. Contacted on Monday by AFP, the mayor of Yerres had already expressed being «devastated» by this tragedy that occurred as the two Essonne municipalities faced a «rise in insults» between rival gangs. According to him, several fights involving young people from both municipalities had taken place in recent days.

The latest of them «started on a bus» before ending fatally in front of the high school. The mayor wanted to issue «a warning» after this «unusual» tragedy in this «very safe» commune in Essonne, urging the youth «to not seek revenge«.

A meeting was underway on Monday evening at the Essonne prefecture between mayors of the department and police and gendarmerie services on the issue of brawls, as confirmed by the prefecture, following a report by BFMTV.

«Last week there was quite a bit of unrest regarding the brawls, especially in this area, in Brunoy… «We wanted to organize a meeting to reinvigorate everyone a bit,» said Frédérique Camilleri, the prefect of Essonne, to AFP.

«I informed them that we had deployed CRS forces to saturate the area,» after the announcement of the teenager’s death, the prefect stated. «I will deploy resources for the coming days,» she added. According to our information, security agents from the Region are present this Tuesday in front of the high school with municipal and national police.

The Essonne department, a territory with 1.3 million inhabitants in the south of the Île-de-France region, is regularly the scene of clashes between groups of young teenagers from rival neighborhoods. One quarter of the fights recorded in France actually take place in this department, as noted by political officials during a conference on the subject a few months ago.
