The risk of forest fires is at its maximum. (PASCAL GUYOT / AFP)
«The wind worries us,» said François-Xavier Lauch, prefect of Hérault, on ICI Hérault (formerly France Bleu) on Sunday, August 17. He called for the utmost vigilance as Météo France placed the department on red alert for a «very high» risk of forest fires on Sunday.
In addition to Hérault, five other departments are on red alert for a «very high» risk of forest fires: Aude, Bouches-du-Rhône, Gard, Pyrénées-Orientales, and Vaucluse. Fourteen are on orange alert: Rhône, Drôme, Ardèche, Var, Haute-Garonne, Tarn, Aveyron, Lot, Tarn-et-Garonne, Lot-et-Garonne, Dordogne, Haute-Vienne, Charente, and Deux-Sèvres. The forest weather forecast does not take into account ongoing fires, but rather the probability of fires starting and spreading based on meteorological conditions.
For the department of Hérault, «it’s the combination of several factors: very dry and abundant vegetation after spring rains, a significantly reduced humidity level, the effect of the heatwave, and then there’s this wind that worries us,» explained the prefect. François-Xavier Lauch hopes that there won’t be too many fire starts, as «during the previous heatwave, there were 21 fire starts in the same day, and it quickly becomes very difficult for our firefighters.»
The state representative called for responsibility and caution, as the «consequences can be absolutely catastrophic.» He cited the example of the massive fire in Aude that ravaged 17,000 hectares of vegetation. The cost of the damage amounts to «millions of euros, not to mention the loss of human lives, and the anxiety of the populations.» In Aude, a 65-year-old woman died at her home in Saint-Laurent-de-la-Cabrerisse. The fire also caused two serious injuries.
