The faithful will enter St. Peter’s Basilica on Saturday afternoon for the first officially scheduled LGBT gathering at the Vatican.

For the first time, an LGBT gathering is on the official calendar of the Catholic Church’s jubilee year pilgrimage in Rome, held every 25 years. It takes place on Saturday, September 6 at St. Peter’s Basilica. A prayer vigil was held on Friday in the center of Rome.

Among the faithful is Christian, 65 years old. «I keep a low profile,» says the man who identifies as a Catholic, aristocrat, and homosexual. A very different way of living his faith compared to Hugo. At 35, he recounts that faith «came to him» at the age of 15. «I choose to practice it within the Catholic Church because I also found people who welcomed me,» he continues.

While the Catholic Church still condemns homosexuality, Christian does not have as peaceful an approach. «I am in revolt against this Church that judges us without even knowing us,» says the sexagenarian. Hugo, on the other hand, has a more philosophical view of things: «Christ teaches us to judge a tree by its fruits. When we see homosexuals living, we can judge that many fruits are very good.»

The thirty-year-old is not «shocked» that the pope «does not prioritize the issue of welcoming homosexual people.» «I am patient,» he simply states, as Pope Leo XIV has yet to speak out about LGBT faithful. «I would like this pope to say that homophobia is a sin,» Christian admits. «That he opens the door to us by saying ‘welcome’. I am emotional about it, because he can do it.»

Having long believed that homosexuality was a sin, Christian is reassured to see such a pilgrimage organized by the LGBT community. «When I was able to frequent associations, I finally saw that I was not alone,» he is moved. «That’s why it’s essential to be able to testify.» Hugo, on his part, is delighted to be able to offer «a prayer of thanks for this historic first», where he can express his gratitude to God.
