The Olympic Aquatic Center (CAO), one of the two major facilities built specifically for the Paris 2024 Olympics, was inaugurated on Monday in Saint-Denis. This facility is presented as a sustainable legacy for the region and its inhabitants.
The imposing complex, with its concave wooden design, is the largest aquatic center in France. It includes four pools, a climbing wall, a fitness area, and nine padel courts. Designed to host international competitions in all swimming disciplines, it will be the venue for the European Championships in 2026.
During an official ceremony, the Olympic rings were unveiled on its esplanade, in the presence of Sports Minister Marie Barsacq. The minister praised the «legacy» left by the Games, «for high performance but also for the territories, the inhabitants, and the youth.»
Beyond sporting performance, the CAO has a strong social purpose. Located in a department where one in two children cannot swim when entering middle school, it is intended to increase the capacity to accommodate school groups by six times, as highlighted by Mathieu Hanotin, Mayor of Saint-Denis. Middle school students who tested the pools praised the cleanliness and space offered by this new center.
Near the A1 motorway, a future park will be developed, and a footbridge already connects the CAO to the Stade de France, facilitating access to this facility destined to become a pillar of sports and local life in the Paris metropolitan area.
The total cost of the project amounted to nearly 175 million euros, almost double the initial budget planned in 2017. This investment was justified by the desire to provide Seine-Saint-Denis with a top-level sports facility, capable of accommodating both elite athletes and the general public.
The French diving team has already settled in this unique venue, equipped with diving platforms of various heights up to 10 meters. Among the first users, Olympic diver Jules Bouyer said he was «happy to train in one of the best pools in the world.»
