A gendarmerie alert has been issued through a press release regarding a new method used by burglars, called the «white paper technique», which allows them to check if the homeowners are present before committing their crime.
In a gendarmerie press release, the Ministry of the Interior warns: «For a few days, residents have been finding A4-size white papers in their mailboxes».
This «white paper technique» involves burglars placing a sheet of paper in the mailboxes. «The perpetrators leave the paper slightly protruding», and if the paper is still in place several days later, it indicates the potential absence of the homeowners.
If a white paper is discovered, the National Gendarmerie recommends «contacting 17 or your local brigade», «kindly retrieving the paper without handling it and possibly with gloves», «placing it in a kraft envelope without folding it if possible», they also specify that «a gendarmerie patrol will come to collect it».
The gendarmerie in Corsica, which shared this national release on social media, mentions in its comment that «the method has already been observed in several departments», but does not specify if it has been reported on the island.
