The fountain with the redesigned balloon and ring is making its grand return to the Tuileries Gardens from June 21st to September 14th. It will be completely open to the public and will take off each evening if the weather permits.
For the next three summers, the Olympic fountain returning to the Tuileries Gardens will be freely accessible to visitors and tourists, as detailed by the prefecture of the Ile-de-France region on Thursday, alongside EDF, the Louvre, and designer Mathieu Lehanneur. It will not be exactly the same, nor completely different.
The balloon and ring have been redone, and it will take off each evening if the weather allows from June 21st to September 14th. This original hot air balloon-like fountain, with an electric flame, attracted hundreds of thousands of people during the Olympics and Paralympics, and reservations were required to see it up close.
«We are very proud of this return,» explained Kim Pham, administrator of the Louvre, who noted that the Tuileries Gardens will close in the evening after 10:30 pm (8:30 pm GMT), and a little earlier in August, when it will rise to 60 meters in the Paris sky. «A permanent but not completely permanent reinstallation is the best option we could find,» rejoiced the creator of the fountain, also the designer of the Olympic torch, Mathieu Lehanneur.
The flame is still «100% electric,» with LED projectors and misters, added Pierre Viriot, EDF’s director of communication. But unlike last year, it will be extinguished at night. Mathieu Gobbi, CEO of Aérophile, which piloted the contraption with teams each evening last summer, warns that there will be a little less suspense this year. The website vasqueparis2024.fr will inform about the program and any weather-related contingencies.
The reconstruction of the balloon and ring and its operation for three summers are funded by the Olympic organizing committee and EDF, explained Marc Guillaume, prefect of the Ile-de-France region. This new version of the fountain costs 2.5 million euros, and its operation costs 2.5 million euros per summer for a total of 250 days of service.
Le début de l’installation de la vasque aura lieu fin mai.
