The Île-de-France publishing house «Ça et là» had to do a fundraising campaign to continue to exist. Despite having several successful comic books in its catalog, it is facing a decrease in activity in bookstores.

It should have been a great year for the publishing house Çà et Là: its 20th anniversary. But its existence is in jeopardy. A fundraising campaign was launched on a dedicated website to allow it to cope and continue to publish authors.

«Comics had some very good years, recently in particular, paradoxically, during Covid. People read a lot and bought a lot. The return to normal was quite violent,» says Serge Ewenczyk, president and founder of Çà et Là.

The sector’s activity has decreased by about 10%. While big titles like Astérix allow major publishing houses to survive, «independent publishing houses depend almost exclusively on the activity of bookstores. When bookstores are struggling, we are also struggling,» he continues.

However, the publishing house Çà et Là has nothing to be ashamed of in its catalog. Specialized in translating foreign comic books, it has won two Fauves d’or at the Angoulême festival.

This award, a sort of Palme d’Or in this field, rewarded «La Couleur des choses» by Swiss author Martin Panchaud in 2023, and «Écoute, jolie» by Brazilian author Marcello Quintanilha in 2022. «My Friend Dahmer» by John «Derf» Backderf has also received several awards and significant success in bookstores.

These titles have given the publishing house a boost. Especially since the number of publications is intentionally limited: about a dozen titles each year, totaling 200 in the span of 20 years.

«Some structures publish a huge number of titles, up to 500 per year. It’s colossal! They have a different approach than ours, more quantitative than qualitative.

They are taking market share, occupying space on shelves in bookstores,» explains Serge Ewenczyk.

Because the comic book reading boom has sharpened appetites. Approximately 6,000 new releases come out every year, half of which are represented by manga.

Most titles quickly fall into oblivion (half of the 6,000 new releases do not reach 1,000 copies sold). Successful comics allow other authors to be published.

«In publishing, it is customary to say that 20% of books finance 80% of the losses of others. In reality, this effect has been accentuated. It is more like 10% of titles», indicates this publisher.

This publisher does not want to succumb to the phenomenon and will maintain this publishing pace: «We really want to try to keep the artisanal aspect that is ours.»

The year should have been a good one for the Île-de-France publishing house «Ça et là»: its 20th anniversary. But its existence is threatened. To the point that a fundraising campaign was launched on a dedicated website to allow it to face and continue to publish authors.

«Comics have had some very good years, recently in particular, and it’s paradoxical, during Covid. People have read a lot and bought a lot. The return to normal was quite violent», says Serge Ewenczyk, president and founder of Çà et Là.
