This new web portal, climate.us, is positioned as the successor to the government platform climate.gov, a global reference on climate change that was closed this summer. Former members of the climate.gov team, one of the world’s leading authorities on climate change, are not giving up. Despite the closure of their platform by the Trump administration, which seeks to undermine science, these ex-federal officials are continuing their environmental efforts. With climate.us, they aim to preserve the old data within an organization with an expanded mission, as reported by the British newspaper The Guardian.

«Many federal officials are in mourning, as they feel they have lost not only a job, but also a calling,» said Rebecca Lindsey, former head of climate.gov. «None of us were ready to give up on our mission.» The historic climate website now redirects to another NOAA website controlled by political officials, noted Rebecca Lindsey. The public’s access to a wealth of information on topics such as El Niño or the increase in greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere is no longer available, as summarized by CNN.

Climate.us aims to pick up where climate.gov left off. Its Instagram account describes it as a nonprofit successor to climate.gov, ensuring public access to reliable climate data, tools, and information, with a link for donations. «The primary function of climate.gov was interpretation, contributing to scientific translation for non-technical audiences and providing engaging, shareable, and reusable content,» emphasized Rebecca Lindsey to CNN. «Our priority is to develop these interpretative resources, highly valued by the public.»

In addition to the scientific rigor and popularization elements that made climate.gov recognized, climate.us intends to offer various services to local communities, such as mapping flood risks related to climate change. However, according to Rebecca Lindsey, this must be accompanied by efforts to preserve what has been produced to prevent the Trump administration from attempting to hide, erase, or alter established knowledge.

In August, Energy Minister Chris Wright announced plans to reassess key scientific climate reports, potentially opening the door to their revision in a new attempt to challenge the scientific consensus on the subject. While these documents are not legally binding, they play a major role in guiding legislators, businesses, and local governments in their ecological efforts.

Since the 19th century, the Earth’s average temperature has increased by 1.1°C. Scientists have definitively linked this rise to human activities, which consume fossil fuels (coal, oil, and gas). This unprecedented warming threatens the future of our societies and biodiversity. However, solutions such as renewable energy, frugality, and reduced meat consumption exist.
