Michael Wiseman, an American wanted for child sexual abuse, had been living for a year in Kilstett, a village next to Strasbourg, under a false name. Also accused of sexual assault on a minor in France, he was arrested on Saturday, November 1 by the French police after 13 years on the run.
It marks the end of a 13-year run across several countries and three continents. Michael Wiseman, an American citizen convicted in the United States for child sexual abuse and then on the run abroad, was arrested at his home in Kilstett (Bas-Rhin) on Saturday, November 1, announced the Scottsdale police in Arizona on Facebook, information first reported by Paris Match. He was one of the most wanted criminals in that southwestern state of the United States. Contacted by France 3 Alsace, the prosecutor of Strasbourg, Clarisse Taron, confirmed that an investigation is ongoing in the case.

«His criminal activities and repeated attempts to evade arrest span nearly two decades and several countries, and have now come to an end,» applauded American police in a statement shared on social media. The 51-year-old man, according to AFP, had been wanted since 2012 after fleeing during a period of parole. He had been arrested in 2008 for multiple charges of sexual exploitation of minors.
Michael Wiseman is said to have committed new acts of sexual abuse on a minor under 15, potentially in France, on a child he had adopted, according to the Scottsdale police statement. Authorities discovered this after accessing documents and information on Wiseman’s «personal account» in recent weeks. It was these new facts that allowed French authorities to charge Wiseman with «rape and sexual assault of a minor under 15» and proceed with his arrest.
He is currently detained in France for his crimes committed on French soil, awaiting extradition to the United States. According to the statement, he lived in this village a few kilometers from Strasbourg under a false identity: Robert Danilewski.
It was exactly under his name that he introduced himself to the parents of students at the Louise Weiss primary school in Kilstett: «For us, he was Robert,» confirms Matthieu Weiss, whose son attended school with Michael Wiseman’s adopted son in CM2.
«We are all shocked because he seemed like a man full of good intentions, incredibly kind. It’s crazy. That he could have approached our children…Who’s to say he didn’t commit other abuses against children in Kilstett?»
Arriving in Kilstett about a year ago, Michael Wiseman had «done a lot» to integrate into the small community of dynamic parents in the village, according to Matthieu Weiss. «With other parents, I organize parties at the school, and he was always there with his sons. I remember one time when my son was playing with his in the communal park. Some even sent their children to him, known as Robert, because we had no idea and the children, who only spoke English at first, were very nice.» The mayor of Kilstett indicates that according to the elementary school principal, the two children have been «placed in a safe place.»
Michael Wiseman offered language courses and had started his own mushroom cultivation company in Kilstett. After a quick search, we came across the site Deux Petits Champis, run by «Robert» (precisely the name Michael Wiseman used since his arrival in France) and «Tanh,» presented as his wife. We tried to contact the number provided on the site to confirm that it was indeed Michael Wiseman, but it went straight to voicemail.
«He showed me his mushroom production, oyster mushrooms, and had suggested that we work together, but it didn’t work out,» confirmed a shopkeeper to our reporting team on Saturday, November 15. «I am shocked like everyone else, we couldn’t imagine. Even though he didn’t speak French, he was very friendly, and so were the children.»
The presentation of the site, however, seems to corroborate the geographical elements made public by the Scottsdale police regarding Wiseman’s itinerary after his escape. «Nothing in our paths predisposed us to this: I was a private jet pilot in Europe, and my wife worked as a check-in agent for Delta Airlines in Vietnam. My job took me all over the world, including to Vietnam where I met her.»
According to our information, the two adopted children who were attending school in Kilstett are of Vietnamese origin. And contrary to what the presentation of the site implies – if it indeed corresponds to the company created by Wiseman – it was not his job that took him all over the world, but the pursuit by US authorities.
According to the Scottsdale police statement, Wiseman was first arrested in February 2008 in the United States on several charges of sexual exploitation of minors. In November, he removed his electronic bracelet and fled the United States. He was arrested in 2009 in Spain, then extradited to the United States. He was convicted again in 2012 but fled again while on parole. That’s when he went to Vietnam, Poland, before ending up in France.
