Dan Elkayam, a young engineer from Le Bourget, was killed in the anti-Semitic attack in Sydney, where he had been working for a year. This tragedy, condemned by French and Australian authorities, has caused deep emotions, especially in his hometown of Le Bourget.
A young French computer engineer, 27-year-old Dan Elkayam, was killed in the attack on Jews in Sydney, Australia, where he had been working for just a year. The announcement was made shortly after 7:00 PM by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot.
The young man, originally from Le Bourget in Seine-Saint-Denis, was among the 15 people killed by two men who opened fire on a crowd celebrating the Jewish festival of Hanukkah on Bondi Beach in Sydney on Sunday.
At least 40 others were injured, according to the latest report from Australian authorities, who described the act as «anti-Semitic.»
«It is with immense sadness that we learned that our compatriot Dan Elkayam would be among the victims of the abhorrent terrorist attack that struck the Jewish families gathered on Bondi Beach in Sydney on the first day of Hanukkah,» the minister wrote on X.
«This despicable act is a tragic manifestation of a revolting surge of anti-Semitic hatred that we must defeat,» he added. «I think of his family and loved ones and express to them the full solidarity of the nation,» added Emmanuel Macron on X.
The mayor of Le Bourget, Jean-Baptiste Borsali, paid tribute to Dan Elkayam’s memory in a message on Facebook. «In these painful hours, on behalf of the City of Le Bourget and personally, I send my sincerest thoughts to his family and all his loved ones. The loss of a child, far from home, in such tragic circumstances deeply upsets us,» he wrote.
«His parents, who still live in an apartment in Le Bourget, were well-known merchants in the city, who ran a furniture store,» he detailed to AFP, emphasizing that the young man’s death «stirred up emotions in the city because they are very sociable, very kind and well known to the population.»
The president of the Representative Council of French Jewish Institutions (Crif), Yonathan Arfi, spoke with the parents on Sunday.
After studying in Montreuil and Créteil, in the Parisian suburbs, he worked in Bois-Colombes (Hauts-de-Seine) before moving to Australia, to Sydney, where he worked as a computer analyst since December 2024.
According to his social networks, he had traveled to Mexico, Indonesia, Thailand, and Australia over the past three years. He played football for the Bourget club for several years, «and also played futsal,» said the mayor, Mr. Borsali.
Following this attack in Sydney, the Minister of the Interior, Laurent Nuñez, requested to «strengthen the presence» of law enforcement around Jewish places of worship in France, in a telegram sent to prefects, police and gendarmerie officials, which AFP obtained.
«The prevalence of the terrorist threat that continues to weigh on our country,» the minister wrote, «as well as the persistence of tensions on the international level, require maintaining extreme vigilance, especially towards religious events and places.»
