In the Swiss Valais, after Sierre and not far from Zermatt, the village of Blatten is no more, or almost no more, since Wednesday afternoon, May 28, when the catastrophic scenario unfolded. The glacier that loomed over the village collapsed massively.
The small village of Blatten had been completely evacuated since last week due to the danger. The collapse of the glacier had been expected for several days.
At around 3:30 PM, the Birch glacier collapsed. 40 seconds of a horrifying spectacle.
A massive cloud of ice and debris cascaded down the mountain, as seen in the video published on Youtube. The force and speed of the cloud were such that it continued its course on the opposite slope of the valley where the Lonza River flows.

The missing person is a 64-year-old resident of the region, who, according to the Valais cantonal police, was in the area at the time of the event. Three rescuers were airlifted near the debris cone to search for the missing person, with a drone equipped with a thermal camera to detect body heat also deployed, the police said in a statement.
Many homes in this small village, which normally has around 300 residents, were destroyed, said Jonas Jeitziner, deputy head of information for the regional emergency management service, to the Keystone-ATS news agency.
A significant increase in activity had been observed since Tuesday night and had intensified during the day on Wednesday, transforming the area over the hours.
In the early afternoon, the avalanche barrier finally let some of the debris pass through. On Tuesday around 6:00 PM and Wednesday around 4:00 AM, two significant collapses had already occurred on the Swiss glacier.

La personne disparue est un habitant de la région, âgé de 64 ans, qui se trouvait dans la zone concernée au moment de l’événement selon la police cantonale du Valais. Trois sauveteurs ont été dépêchés en hélicoptère près du cône de déjection pour retrouver la personne disparue. Un drone équipé d’une caméra thermique pour détecter la chaleur du corps a également été utilisé, comme l’a précisé la police dans un communiqué.
De nombreuses habitations de ce petit village, qui compte habituellement environ 300 habitants, ont été détruites, a déclaré Jonas Jeitziner, responsable adjoint de l’information du service régional de gestion des urgences, à l’agence de presse Keystone-ATS.
Une augmentation significative de l’activité avait été observée depuis la nuit de mardi à mercredi et s’est encore accentuée au cours de la journée de mercredi, transformant progressivement les lieux.
En début d’après-midi, une partie des gravats a fini par passer à travers le barrage par-avalanche. Deux effondrements importants s’étaient déjà produits sur le glacier suisse, l’un mardi vers 18h00 et l’autre mercredi vers 04h00.
Dans le Valais suisse, après Sierre et non loin de Zermatt, le village de Blatten n’est plus, ou presque, depuis ce mercredi 28 mai après-midi où le scénario catastrophe s’est réalisé.
