The trial of Cédric Jubillar brought together dozens of journalists, witnesses, experts, and bystanders. If the case includes all the elements that characterize a femicide, the term was rarely used, even when the painter-plasterer was sentenced to 30 years in prison.

It’s a term that was rarely heard before, during, and after the trial of Cédric Jubillar. The word «femicide» is now recognized in this case after the painter-plasterer was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the murder of his wife Delphine.

Although it is used in everyday language, this term does not exist in French criminal law. But it was mentioned within the walls of the courthouse in Albi by lawyers and civil parties. For example, Pauline Rongier, a lawyer for a friend of Delphine Jubillar, believes that this case is a «textbook case» or even a «culmination of femicide.»

For her, «the concealment of the body is no longer a reward for impunity,» and this verdict «marks a significant progress in the fight against domestic violence,» she wrote on Instagram after the verdict. This social media post in the form of a press release has greatly displeased some of her colleagues, who expressed their concerns on the X platform.

Childhood friend of Delphine, Chloé Placier also used the word femicide. During the trial, she recounted her friendship with Delphine, whom she met in middle school when she was 12 years old. A bond that continued over the years, Chloé witnessed the birth of the Jubillar couple.

«No trace in the house,» defense reminds

«Delphine became the symbol of femicides. For us, it is very disturbing. (…) He (Cédric) understood that everything was over. It is a way of taking possession of her life until death. I am certain that he killed Delphine with his hands,» she explained during her interrogation.

The interpretation is different for Emmanuelle Franck, Cédric Jubillar’s lawyer. In her plea, she rejects the theory of what she calls «a crime of passion.»

«It is the crime that leaves the most traces, because one does not think about anything, one does not control anything. And there is no trace in the house, no struggle or cleaning, there is not even the beginning of a crime scene,» she tells the jurors.

Except for a few moments in the trial, why is the term femicide almost absent compared to other trials? We asked Delphine Roussiau, director of the Women’s House in Albi. Her organization welcomes and supports women in great vulnerability. A quarter of them are victims of domestic violence.

«As long as the trial had not taken place, it was assumed that the media had not allowed themselves to use the term. Today, I hope that it will be recognized as such, and that public opinion will become aware of the urgency of these situations,» calmly explains Delphine Roussiau, who followed this trial closely.

This term femicide reflects a social reality that we fight against every day through our missions.

For her, the use of the term femicide is important to «recognize the nature of murder against a woman.» Today, «the sociological context, precise descriptions, and statistics» help to «clarify the seriousness of the act,» according to the activist.

However, feminist groups did not gather near the courthouse in Albi. «It’s a trial with many question marks. The associations were waiting for the legitimacy of justice to speak out and mobilize around the cause,» Delphine Roussiau explains. Her organization does not rule out making their voice heard during the appeal trial, scheduled for 2026. «It will be a symbolically strong time,» anticipates the director.

In 2023, women accounted for 81% of the victims of femicides or homicides within couples in France. 93 women died from femicide that year.
