It’s a match like any other played on Sundays on the pitches of Gironde. On the afternoon of Sunday, March 2, Football Club de Gradignan hosted RC Chambery at the Plaine des Sports de Mandavit. It’s a district match in Division 2. Gradignan is leading the score on the field. «I spoke with the referees, everything was going rather well. A tough match, but without any major incident,» says the president of Gradignan’s club, Arnaud Mallemouche. The leader was at that moment, a few kilometers away, witnessing the victory of his women’s team.
But in a matter of minutes, everything changes. «Players from both clubs were squabbling, insulting each other. Shoving, punches were exchanged, it happens from time to time. We don’t condone it and it’s sanctioned later by football authorities. But what happens next is surreal, crazy,» emphasizes the president of Chambéry’s club, Guillaume Latrille, who was informed of the events by his officials present at Gradignan.
This «crazy» moment is the invasion of the field by about thirty spectators. «One of our players, Hugo, was beaten in front of his father, mother, and little sister,» laments Guillaume Latrille. Several players were injured. Most importantly, the captain of his team, involved in the altercation during the game, was subjected to a wave of violence, a real lynch. «They jumped on him. They were armed with car keys between their knuckles. Just a few centimeters away, they could have blinded him in one eye,» the president of RC Chambéry still traumatized deplores.
If some of his teammates hadn’t protected him, they could have killed him.

Treated by the firefighters, the captain of the RC Chambéry reserve team underwent eyelid surgery on Monday. According to witnesses on the scene, parents were even «pursued with a wrench» by one of the assailants.
«A bigger tragedy was averted,» exclaims Guillaume Latrille. One person has been taken into custody and questioned on Monday. Currently, no complaint has been filed yet. «The victim’s complaint should be filed tomorrow,» our police sources inform us. «The investigation begins, then the witnesses will be heard.»
At FC Gradignan, there is «total dejection, despair,» says Arnaud Mallemouche. «We strive to instill values of humanism, living together, social diversity, fair play. We’ve been working hard on this for years, and in an hour, everything collapses,» Arnaud Mallemouche.

The work of our educators is recognized everywhere.» However, the leader «doesn’t want to downplay anything. We cannot condone it. If we need to expel the team, we will do it,» admits Arnaud Mallemouche. In Chambéry, Guillaume Latrille is «considering the legal actions we can take. If we could take joint action with Gradignan.» The two presidents acknowledge «that there is no issue between the two clubs. The Chambéry neighborhood is right next to Gradignan,» Guillaume Latrille even suggests.

It is the organizer’s responsibility «to ensure the smooth running of the match and to put an end to the wrong behavior of spectators.»
Sanctions will also be imposed by football authorities, in this case regarding the Gradignan-Chambéry match, by the Gironde Football District.
