On this first day of the Lessay Fair, Yaël Braun-Pivet walks through the aisles of the fair. The President of the National Assembly inaugurates the event and answered questions from Pierre-Marie Puaud for the special edition of Ici 12/13.
«Madam President, what are you doing here at the Lessay fair, when so many things are being discussed in Paris?»
«You know, right now, it’s important to be everywhere, to be on the ground, to listen to the French people, to show them that we are by their side. And when the parliamentarians invited me, Philippe Gosselin, Stéphane Travert, to come and inaugurate this fair, I obviously responded, because it’s important for people to know that we are on the ground with them and that doing politics is above all about listening to them, reaching out to them. And that is the reason for my presence at the Lessay fair.»
«So, the fair doesn’t quite have its usual appearance, there are few animals. Bluetongue disease poses risks to livestock. And the breeders no longer have interlocutors, no longer have a minister…»
«The breeders have local interlocutors, they have prefects, they have agricultural chambers, unions, they have parliamentarians.»
«Do you sense the unease?»
«Well, we sense the concern, but we can see that the situation is being taken into account, that the vaccines are there. Now, we need to dialogue well to coordinate well, to be able to proceed with vaccinations in the best way. You know, there are never any breaks in power. The National Assembly continues to work. The government will be appointed very soon. The Prime Minister is in office. And so, there are ministers in place. And so, state affairs are being managed. And it’s normal, there needs to be this continuity. Unfortunately, we are starting to get used to these periods of instability.»
«Do you feel the unease that this unstable situation creates here during the fair?»
In fact, what I hear everywhere is the French people telling us: «Actually, get moving, hear us, ignore your differences, ignore the deadlines and above all, I heard it again just now, put aside your egos to try to work together. We are not concerned about the future, take care of us today.» And in this fractured political world, in this fractured National Assembly, I have been doing this since 2022, since I took over the presidency. And Philippe Gosselin, who is behind us and with us, can attest that this has been my way of working since 2017. Bringing together energies, trying to find convergences, never denying differences, but trying to move forward together in the interest of the French people. And it is an imperative necessity today. The French people expect this from us. In the term responsible politician, it is up to us to live up to the expectations of the French people and the expectations of the moment.
