According to a barometer published by Secours Populaire, focusing this year on the situation of young people under 35, they are «particularly affected» by precarity. «Even at the maximum level of 630 euros per month, the scholarship is completely insufficient to make ends meet,» laments a student from Yvelines quoted by the association.
Precarity is deeply rooted in the daily lives of the French population, affecting all aspects of the lives of the most vulnerable, warns a barometer on the perception of poverty published this Thursday by Secours Populaire. «Fifteen years after a first focus on France in 2010, the finding is alarming: all indicators have deteriorated,» laments the association’s study.
Precarity particularly affects» young people under 35, «with significantly higher indicators than in 2010, reflecting a profound hardening of the difficulties faced by the younger generation today compared to previous ones,» explains Secours Populaire in a statement. «Those who are starting out in life and should grow in stability and hope instead suffer the effects of precarity too early. Thus, 50% of them are dissatisfied with their standard of living,» compared to 33% in 2010, the statement reads.
The association highlights» strong concern» about the present and future of young people: «50% feel a strong sense of anxiety, and more than one in five (22%) even say they are desperate«. «Difficult access to the healthcare system, which leaves 40% of young people dissatisfied, exacerbates this mental and physical suffering by limiting their support and care options,» denounces Secours Populaire.
«Difficulties in eating healthily or participating in cultural and leisure activities have increased significantly: 48% of young people struggle to access a balanced diet (29% in 2010), and 56% face difficulties in enjoying leisure or cultural activities (compared to 44% in 2010),» notes the statement.
Given the living conditions of students, many of those we know are fragile or have dark thoughts.

«Even at the maximum level of 630 euros per month, the scholarship is completely insufficient to make ends meet. We end up scraping by every month. Given the living conditions of students, many of those we know are fragile or have dark thoughts,» says Inès, a 26-year-old student from Yvelines, helped by Secours Populaire and quoted in the association’s statement.
Beyond young people, the study reveals that 31% of French people struggle financially to obtain a healthy diet that allows them to have three meals a day, 39% have difficulty paying their electricity bills, and 49% have difficulty going on vacation at least once a year. This survey was conducted by Ipsos Institute, with a sample of 1000 people, representative of the national population aged 18 and over, using the quota method.
