Despite the end of its monopoly in Île-de-France, the RATP, through a subsidiary, will continue to operate all buses in Paris intra-muros. Valérie Pécresse, president of the Region, praised the «latest success» of the CEO of the Régie, Jean Castex, who is leaving to take over the SNCF.
The RATP will continue to be the sole operator of the capital’s buses. The Régie, through a subsidiary, has won the calls for tenders to open up competition for all bus lines in Paris intra-muros, according to the results published on Friday.
Across Île-de-France, the RATP had to accept the arrival of new competitors, but retains 70% of its 226 lines (3,543 buses in total) and 75% of its employees after the process that ended its monopoly. The Italian group ATM SPA, a new entrant, won the operation of 18 bus lines in the Paris region. Keolis, already present in the outer suburbs, obtained 65 lines in the inner suburbs, 2 express bus lines, 3 demand-responsive transport lines, and the management of tramway T9. The Franco-German group Transdev will operate 19 lines.
The two lots awarded on Friday are the last of the process of opening up bus competition in Paris and the inner suburbs that began in 2024. The transport organizing authority, Île-de-France-Mobilités (IDFM), designated RATP Cap Île-de-France, a subsidiary of the RATP, as the operator of these two lots which include 66 bus lines in Paris, seven operational centers, 1,149 vehicles, and 5,000 employees, serving over 7 million residents.
RATP Cap Île-de-France will operate these lines starting from November 1, 2026, for a period of seven years, with the possibility of a two-year extension, IDFM specified.
Valérie Pécresse, president of the Île-de-France region and IDFM, had already praised on Thursday the «last success» of Jean Castex, CEO of RATP on his way to lead the SNCF. «He managed to ensure that the entire bus network in Paris remains under RATP’s control, fairly, it’s wonderful,» she reacted.
This success «concludes a demanding cycle of awards and confirms the strength of our offers and the recognition of our unique expertise in the operation of dense urban networks,» Jean Castex estimated. On Thursday, he emphasized the importance of the «bus 2025 plan» which aims to convert most of RATP’s bus fleet «either to electric or CNG, in other words, to greener options.» «We are at 75% of this program, it’s a huge project,» he said.
