He is a well-known figure in the 5th and 6th arrondissements of the capital for half a century. He earns his living by selling newspapers, newspapers that have already published numerous articles and reports about him. And on Wednesday, January 28, the last newspaper vendor at the capital’s auction became a Knight of the National Order of Merit.
This prestigious decoration, Ali Akbar received it directly from Emmanuel Macron’s hands in the Elysée Palace ballroom. He was hailed by the President as «the voice of the French press» and as an «influential figure in the Saint-Germain-des-Près district and a magnificent example of integration«.
Ali Akbar arrived in France at the age of twenty after facing «poverty, forced labor, violence» in his home country, hoping to find «a better life» here. After a brief stay in Rouen, he settled in Paris. There he coincidentally met Georges Bernier, better known as Professor Choron, the editor of the satirical magazines Charlie Hebdo and Hara-Kiri. This eccentric character offered him to sell his newspapers at auction. Ali accepted and chose the Sciences-po district as his playing field. He never left it.

Today, with Le Monde under his arm, he is one of the prominent figures in the neighborhood. He has built his reputation on his friendliness and attracting customers with headlines reworked with humor to better attract passersby. He often recounts having crossed paths with many future political figures in this student district, starting with Emmanuel Macron himself.
The latter also hailed this «magnificent example» of someone who learned to make French «your language» to better «play with it, thereby adopting a form of irreverence«, all after «fleeing poverty to choose a country of freedom» to build «a life that makes our country stronger and prouder«.
When Ali Akbar started walking the streets of Paris with newspapers in hand, the capital had about forty auction vendors, generally positioned in highly frequented places like metro entrances.
Now retired, he receives a monthly pension of 1,000 euros. Au début de sa carrière, il vendait presque six fois plus de journaux par jour. Cependant, il a été décoré en personne par le Président de la République, Emmanuel Macron, et est désormais chevalier de l’ordre national du Mérite.
Il est une figure emblématique du 5e et 6e arrondissement de Paris depuis cinquante ans. Il gagne sa vie en vendant des journaux, et a déjà été le sujet de nombreux articles et reportages dans la presse. Sa réputation n’est plus à faire, et le 28 janvier dernier, il a été distingué par la plus haute décoration de l’ordre national du Mérite, remise par le Président français.
Cette distinction honorifique a été remise à Ali Akbar par Emmanuel Macron en personne, qui l’a salué comme une icône locale et une voix importante pour la presse française. Il a été décrit comme une personnalité incontournable du quartier de Saint-Germain-des-Prés et un exemple d’intégration remarquable.
Ali Akbar est arrivé en France à l’âge de vingt ans après avoir enduré de nombreuses épreuves dans son pays d’origine. Il est venu chercher une vie meilleure en France, et après un passage à Rouen, il s’est installé à Paris. C’est là qu’il a rencontré Georges Bernier, alias Professeur Choron, qui lui a proposé de vendre ses journaux à la criée. Depuis ce jour, Ali n’a jamais quitté le quartier de Sciences-po.
Aujourd’hui, avec son exemplaire du journal Le Monde sous le bras, il est devenu une figure emblématique du quartier. Sa jovialité et ses manchettes humoristiques lui ont permis de se faire un nom auprès des habitants et des passants.
