A ceremony will be held on Monday, October 27 in Clichy-sous-Bois in Seine-Saint-Denis to commemorate the twentieth anniversary of the death of two teenagers, Zyed Benna and Bouna Traoré.
On October 27, 2005, Zyed Benna and Bouna Traoré, aged 17 and 15, were electrocuted in an EDF transformer where they had taken refuge after a police chase.
This tragedy sparked three weeks of riots that spread from Clichy-sous-Bois to the entire country, leading to the declaration of a state of emergency.
On Monday, October 27 at noon, a commemorative ceremony will take place near the monument located in front of the Robert Doisneau school, where they were students, in the presence of their families.
The association «Au-delà des Mots» organizing this tribute describes it as «a moment of remembrance open to those who wish to pay their respects with respect and dignity«. «A tree will be planted,» said the president of the association, 48-year-old teacher Samir Mihi.
«This will be quite intimate and it may be the last commemoration we organize,» he added, referring to the «quite heavy burden for the families«.
As is done every year, the association also organizes a sports event celebrating the values of solidarity and living together: a futsal tournament on November 2 in a gymnasium in the city.
