Désaccord à Vincennes sur le nom du lycée : Alice Milliat ou Suzanne et Michel Serres ?

Inaugurated in September 2024 in Vincennes, the high school still does not have a name. However, students and teachers have worked on the subject for several months and wish to name it Alice Milliat. But the municipality opposes their choice and wants to impose the name Suzanne and Michel Serres.

When Tempérance, a first-year student in Vincennes, is asked what she calls her high school, she answers: «the new high school.» Located at 106 rue de la Jarry, it still does not have an official name.

However, teachers and students have worked for a year to find figures within the constraints imposed by the Île-de-France region (which owns the site) that the name be that of a local figure and a woman. Eight names were proposed, and the students voted in early May for Alice Milliat.

«It’s a symbol of feminism, she created the first women’s Olympic Games in the Bois de Vincennes. All first and final year students participated in the vote. Alice Milliat is the best name because it’s the one we chose», summarizes Tempérance.

But the municipality does not see things the same way. It proposed to the regional council the name of Suzanne and Michel Serres, after the philosopher and his wife who lived in the town.

«The municipal council voted unanimously for these two Vincennes figures», responds Charlotte Libert, mayor (UDI) of Vincennes.

«It’s an honorable name, but it is already given to another of our facilities, the skate park. We find ourselves in a situation where they voted for a name already taken by another sports facility. It is not possible to have two facilities with the same name», she continues.

To try to break this impasse, a consultation has been launched until September 21.

«In a city, a public facility does not belong to its users. There was a confusion with the way the children were listened to on this issue, we proposed that a non-regulatory vote be held to know the position of the residents of Vincennes. Apparently, we are leaning towards the name Suzanne and Michel Serres», indicates Charlotte Libert.

On the parents’ side, there is a certain bitterness. «Traditionally, the name of a high school is chosen by the school’s board of directors unless the name is predefined by the region», argues Palmira Orella-Michel from the parents’ association APEV-UNAAPE.

Because teachers and students have worked for months to reach this name. This mother of a student regrets that «the process of collective work is not being respected.»

The Region, when contacted, simply stated that they are waiting for the outcome of the consultation initiated by the municipality to choose the final name.

The first-year student, Tempérance, warns: «We are angry with the municipality, we feel like they don’t care about our voice. We are their future voters, if they upset us, they upset their future voters.»

Cependant, la municipalité s’oppose à ce choix et souhaite imposer celui de Suzanne et Michel Serres.
