The investigation into the death of little Emile is reopened this Tuesday, March 25 with the questioning of the boy’s grandparents, uncle, and aunt. This development follows several new elements that raise questions.
The net is closing in on several members of Emile’s family. Twenty months after the disappearance of the little boy in the hamlet of Haut-Vernet, the investigation took an unexpected turn this Tuesday, March 25. The public prosecutor of Aix-en-Provence announced the questioning of the child’s grandparents, uncle, and aunt for «voluntary homicide» and «concealment of a body.»
This is a real thunderbolt in an investigation that showed no signs of concrete progress since the discovery of the boy’s remains. A twist that raises questions about several recently surfaced elements.
A planter seized at nightfall
On March 13, a week after Emile’s funeral and when the searches seemed to be at a standstill, a planter located near the chapel of Haut-Vernet was seized by investigators who returned to the scene for the first time in months.

According to BFMTV, this planter showed traces of blood. The investigators used the Bluestar technique, a product that, when sprayed, becomes phosphorescent blue upon contact with a possible blood trace.
This information has not been confirmed or denied by the public prosecutor of Aix-en-Provence, Jean-Luc Blachon. The prosecutor clarified to France 3 Provence-Alpes: «At this stage, no analysis report has been submitted confirming whether the samples taken during this transport of the investigators contain any blood traces or not.»
«It could also be the blood of a third party, someone who got injured around the planter, explained General François Daoust to 20 Minutes, former director of the IRCGN and the judicial pole of the gendarmerie. But if it is Emile’s blood, it will allow the investigators to rule out the hypothesis of an accident, namely that he got lost, was dehydrated, and fell into the wild.»
Are these really blood traces? Are they of human origin? Animal? As of March 25, the prosecutor has not yet made a statement.
An anonymous letter
The seizure of this planter in front of the village chapel and the resumption of investigations would have been triggered by a mysterious anonymous letter received in February, according to RTL. The author of this letter allegedly suggested to the investigators to go check out the famous planter.
According to Laurent Valdiguié, a journalist at Marianne, who appeared on the set of C l’hebdo on Saturday, March 22, 2025, «One gets the impression of a crow. But as time goes by, it creates convictions, which turn into theories that become certainties.» Was little Emile buried in this planter for a period of time? Is there a crow, as was the case in the Gregory case? Once again, the statement from the public prosecutor is eagerly awaited.
Another twist emerged on Tuesday, March 25. While the profile of the grandparents was scrutinized by investigators, the story of another character is in the spotlight. That of Claude Gilliot, the priest who baptized Emile, and who took his own life on March 15. His funeral took place on Monday, March 24, at the Saint-Jacques convent in Paris, at 10 a.m. The information from Paris Match was confirmed by the sister of the deceased priest on social media.
Claude Gilliot, an Islamic scholar and emeritus professor at the University of Aix-Marseille, was a priest of the Dominican Order. Before his suicide, he left a farewell letter that Paris Match was able to obtain in which he said, «Warn my sister. Tell her that I love her, my brother-in-law, I love them.» According to our colleagues’ information, Claude Gilliot was very close to Emile’s parents and grandparents.
Things changed when the priest provided a photo of Emile and his parents to the press after his disappearance. The child’s family then boycotted the chapel. «I hold a lot against the family of little Emile, because I think everything started from them,» said Claudine Vandenbroucke, Claude Gilliot’s sister.
The investigation into the death of little Emile is reopened on Tuesday, March 25 with the questioning of the boy’s grandparents, an uncle, and an aunt.
