«Look at the prefecture and the EDF tower, they are gray, heavy buildings. At the time, we were doing brutalist architecture and this building is not brutalist, it is modern,» he says about the infrastructure inaugurated in 1979. He recalls that at that time the building was seen as «a bit like a UFO in the architectural landscape.»
In Cergy, 14 constructions have received this distinction, such as the Colonnes, the Axe Majeur, and the Red Footbridge. «When people come to Cergy, they notice the green spaces and buildings. We even created a tour around remarkable 20th-century architecture at the Tourist Office,» says Cergy’s mayor, Jean-Paul Jeandon.
Elsewhere in the region, examples include the Stade de France or the François Mitterrand Library. The «Remarkable Contemporary Architecture» label has been awarded to over 250 infrastructures in the Île-de-France region.
The winners are selected by the Ministry of Culture. To be chosen, it must «have architectural audacity, technical innovations, unique quality, and a dialogue with the environment in which it is located,» says Laurent Roturier, director of DRAC Île-de-France, the Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs.

«Regardez la préfecture et la tour EDF, ce sont des bâtiments gris, lourds. On faisait à l’époque une architecture brutaliste et ce bâtiment n’est pas brutaliste, il est moderne«, dit-il à propos de l’infrastructure inaugurée en 1979. Il se rappelle qu’à ce moment-là le bâtiment était vu «un peu comme un OVNI dans le paysage architectural.»
À Cergy, 14 constructions l’ont obtenu comme les Colonnes, l’Axe Majeur et la Passerelle Rouge. «Quand les gens viennent à Cergy, ils remarquent les espaces verts et les bâtiments. On a même fait une balade autour de l’architecture remarquable du 20ème siècle à l’Office du Tourisme.», indique le maire PS de Cergy Jean-Paul Jeandon.
Ailleurs dans la région, on peut citer par exemple le Stade de France ou la Bibliothèque François Mitterrand. Le label «Architecture Contemporaine Remarquable» a déjà été attribué à plus de 250 infrastructures dans la région francilienne.
Les lauréats sont sélectionnés par le Ministère de la Culture. Pour être retenu, il faut «avoir une audace architecturale, des innovations techniques, une qualité singulière et un dialogue avec l’environnement dans lequel il se situe«, indique Laurent Roturier, directeur de la DRAC Île-de-France, la Direction régionale des affaires culturelles.
