The mayor of Villeneuve-de-Marc (Isère) is hospitalized in serious condition after an assault on the afternoon of Wednesday, August 6, reported by ICI Isère (formerly France Bleu). According to ICI Isère, Gilles Dussault was violently attacked just before 5 p.m. while walking with his son in a street of the town. The prosecutor’s office in Vienne, handling the investigation, stated that the suspect attacked him with an «unidentified object.» The 63-year-old elected official was struck in the chest and transported conscious to the Edouard Herriot hospital in Lyon. His 28-year-old son is less seriously injured and being treated at the Vienne hospital. According to ICI Isère, preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect is a resident of the town. He attempted to flee in a car but crashed into a wall before managing to escape. An investigation is underway for attempted murder. In a statement, the prefect of Isère, Catherine Séguin, «condemns with the utmost firmness this serious and unacceptable act towards elected officials who work for the general interest.» She assures that the perpetrator of the assault «is actively sought after.» Emmanuel Macron described the incident as a «cowardly act» and assured that «everything is being done» to find the perpetrator. In an interview with franceinfo, the president of the mayors of Isère denounced the situation as «totally unacceptable, very serious.» Daniel Vitte, mayor of Montrevel, expressed being «moved, shocked, and outraged.» «Since 2020, this is the 4th assault on an elected official in the performance of their duties, but this time the seriousness of the injuries reported leads me to be even more outraged because we have an accumulation of situations,» reacted Daniel Vitte. He mentioned «extreme situations, individuals with incomprehensible behaviors.» The president of the Isère mayors downplayed the frequency of these assaults, «extremely rare, but when they do happen, it’s a complete outrage: we are also not prepared for this type of situation,» he reminded. He also expressed his «solidarity» with his colleague and the officials of the town. «Enough! Another degree of aggression towards a mayor and his son,» reacted David Lisnard, president of the Association of French Mayors (AMF). «On behalf of the AMF, I extend all our support to our colleague in critical condition and his family, and I urge the State to fulfill its security duty. For all victims and for the Republic.» Sans abonnement.
