For 13 years, entry to three museums in the Val-d’Oise department was free, but the Departmental Council felt that this free entry was detrimental to their image. It will now cost a small fee to visit them.
In the heart of the Vexin, 50 km from Paris, the Val-d’Oise archaeological museum displays its new prices. Between three and five euros. Despite being free for 13 years, entry to this museum now requires payment.
This weekend, a couple from Paris who had previously visited the museum discovered that they now had to pay for entry. «I agree, if it helps maintain and keep it in good condition. On the contrary! In any case, it doesn’t bother us at all!»
«There are still some hesitant people because they were used to it being free. But otherwise, generally, they are rather understanding», testifies Marie Potherat, receptionist at the archaeological museum. «It’s a very beautiful museum with permanent and temporary exhibitions. It was nice when it was free, but well, it was the region that paid for it, or we paid for it with our taxes, it probably comes out to about the same,» concedes another visitor.
It is not the Île-de-France Region, but the Val-d’Oise department that owns the museum. In 2011, it made three of its cultural sites free. Its archaeological museum, the abbey of Maubuisson which exhibits contemporary art, and the museum of tools in Wy-dit-Joli-Village.

According to the Departmental Council, free entry had a negative impact on the image and revenues of the museums. «It turns out that free cultural sites are less well-regarded than others and are less respected. There are fewer sales in the shops. We also received this feedback from the receptionists at our sites. That’s why we had this reflection on the department’s pricing policy,» explains Patricia José (DVD), departmental councilor delegated to culture.
With prices capped at five euros, the Val-d’Oise Departmental Council is not looking to fill its coffers, but to be more attractive. It points out that the most visited site in Val-d’Oise, the Château de la Roche-Guyon, sells tickets for nine euros fifty.
Il sera nécessaire de payer un petit montant pour les visiter.
Pour accéder à ces sites, il faudra dépenser un peu d’argent.
