Pourquoi les rames de métro ne sont-elles plus en bois ?

Parigo Express answers the questions of Île-de-France users every week. In wood, the old metro cars in Paris were much more elegant, so why replace them?

Just like other means of transport at the time, the first metro, launched in 1900, was also built in wood. An aesthetic and economical choice but then, why did these cars disappear?

On August 10, 1903, a fire at Couronnes station caused the death of 84 people and the destruction of 12 cars. Technicians then realized that high voltage electricity and wood didn’t necessarily mix well, and new safety procedures were put in place.

New metal motor cars made their appearance followed by the installation of the famous Sprague-Thomson in 1931. The model would circulate on the metro for nearly 75 years.
