A 42-year-old visually impaired traveler died on Tuesday, December 30 around 11:30 pm after accidentally falling on the Parisian metro tracks at the Denfert-Rochereau station on line 6, as reported by franceinfo (Radio France) from a source close to the case.

According to this source, the surveillance footage shows the man walking with a white cane, approaching the edge of the platform, taking a step forward, and falling on the tracks as the metro arrives.

«The surveillance footage shows him stepping forward to the edge of the platform and looking for a door, probably after hearing the arrival of the train traveling in the opposite direction», confirms the Paris prosecutor’s office. When contacted by franceinfo, the RATP explains that the victim, «a visually impaired traveler,» «fell on the tracks as the train arrived at the station».

The quick intervention of the firefighters who extracted the victim from the tracks did not allow for resuscitation. The Paris prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation to determine the cause of death, entrusted to the 14th district police station.

The RATP indicates that a support and assistance unit for victims has been activated. The driver, very shocked, was taken care of by his superiors. It offers «its condolences to the family of the victim».
