In Argentina, he will forever be remembered as the pope of the most deprived, and this popular soup pays tribute to his twelve years of papacy in the service of «a Church that reaches out to the people.»

The Argentinians spent the whole day honoring Pope Francis, the country’s own son. A mass was held by the Archbishop of Buenos Aires at the Cathedral, and a pilgrimage took place in the different places frequented by Father Bergoglio when he served in the Argentine capital. One of the highlights of the day was a massive soup kitchen on the Plaza de Mayo, in the heart of the city.

With a ladle in hand, Catalina from the youth group of the Lujan parish fills plastic containers and distributes them, «We prepared pasta with vegetables, a vegetarian menu. In this pot, it’s pasta and chicken. People are thrilled!» On the Plaza de Mayo, in front of the cathedral, all social organizations brought out boxes full of pizzas or sandwiches at noon, as well as giant pots or mobile barbecues to grill sausages.

This collective initiative is obviously a tribute to the «Pope of the poor,» according to Berenice Ianez, a deputy from the city of Buenos Aires. «In Buenos Aires, the number of homeless people has increased significantly, as well as those who have a roof over their heads but cannot eat every day. This initiative is our way of paying tribute to Francis,» explains the elected official. Before highlighting Pope Francis’s twelve years of papacy, «who showed the way to a Church that reaches out to the people. By reaching out to the people, it is possible to understand their needs and take into account the most marginalized. A Church for all, all, all,» she concludes.

A little further away, Marcos from the «Solidarity Journalism» association reveals the secrets of a nutritious meal for people who do not eat enough: «There are vegetables, fiber, and proteins with lentils or dry beans. On Sundays, we usually make popular soups. There are people who haven’t eaten anything on Saturday and won’t eat until the next day,» details Marcos. «So the plate we distribute on Sunday noon is the only meal of the weekend for them. So, we make nutritious and hearty meals. In a large pot, we provide 200 meals per weekend.»

A popular soup as a tribute that shows a united society, one that includes and extends a hand to the poor. A strong legacy of Pope Francis who has advocated throughout his life, from Buenos Aires to the Vatican, for a more authentic and humane Church.
