The controls on the carpool lane of the Parisian ring road, a legacy of the Olympic lanes, will come into effect from Thursday, with a video enforcement system. In case of non-compliance, the fine is 135 euros.
Since early March, only vehicles with at least two passengers, public transport, taxis, emergency vehicles, and people with reduced mobility are allowed to use this dedicated lane from Monday to Friday, from 7:30 am to 10:30 am and from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Starting May 2, anyone not included in the above list will risk a fine of 135 euros.
135 euro fine
On Friday, the 10 radars set up along the Olympic lane this summer will be activated to identify individuals driving alone in their vehicles, who will face a fine of 135 euros.
The system is equipped with a «shape recognition» camera that can differentiate between a mannequin and a human, including a baby in a car seat, as explained by David Belliard, deputy to Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo in charge of transportation. However, he clarified during a press briefing that no photos of faces are taken. «It is not an automatic enforcement as it requires the intervention of a municipal police officer» who will verify compliance with the rules, including cross-referencing with license plate photos, added the Green Party elected official.
The dedicated lane, aimed at combating air pollution and noise for the 550,000 residents living near the ring road, perpetuates the system of Olympic and Paralympic lanes reserved for athletes and official delegations during the 2024 Olympics.
The section between quai d’Issy and porte de Bercy is not affected
To the south, the section between quai d’Issy and porte de Bercy, approximately one-third of the ring road, is exempt from the system because it was not an Olympic lane. The measure aims to enhance the effects of reducing the speed from 70 km/h to 50 km/h on the 35 km ring road encircling the capital, effective since October 1st last year.

Since that date, «traffic jams have decreased by 20 to 50 %» on Europe’s busiest urban highway with 1.5 million daily trips, over 80% of which are single-occupancy vehicles, emphasized David Belliard. And since March, «we have observed a speed differential of 7 to 8 km/h between the dedicated lane and other lanes. This means smoother traffic flow», argued the Green Party candidate for the 2026 municipal elections.
Like the speed reduction, the dedicated lane has sparked skepticism and even anger from the opposition. The LR President of the Ile-de-France region, Valérie Pécresse, has requested the possibility of deactivating the lane in case of congestion. The controls on the carpool lane of the Parisian ring road, a legacy of the Olympic lanes, will come into effect from Thursday, with a video surveillance system. In case of non-compliance, the fine amounts to 135 euros. Since the beginning of March, only vehicles with at least two passengers, public transport, taxis, emergency vehicles, and people with reduced mobility are allowed to circulate on this dedicated lane from Monday to Friday, from 7:30 am to 10:30 am and from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
