Des fidèles attendent devant la basilique Sainte-Marie-Majeure de Rome, le 27 avril 2025. A long line in the streets of Rome. Thousands of faithful began to pay their respects on Sunday, April 27 in the morning at the tomb of Pope Francis, who was buried the day before in the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome. Francis, who passed away on Easter Monday at the age of 88, was laid to rest - like seven popes before him - in a private ceremony on Saturday in this church dedicated to the Virgin and one of the four papal basilicas of Rome, where he would pray before and after each trip abroad.

From 5 a.m., the public was able to access his tomb, in the left nave of the basilica. Above the marble tombstone, which bears the sole inscription «Franciscus» – Francis in Latin – hangs the cross of the «good shepherd», a copy of the one worn by Pope Francis, illuminated by a subtle light. Approximately an hour and a half wait was necessary to enter the church this morning, according to a France Télévisions journalist on site. Entries had to be even blocked later in the morning due to the overwhelming influx of faithful.

«I felt the need to be present this morning at five o’clock to wait in line, it was a duty,» said Nicola Conticello, a 60-year-old Sicilian tourist, to AFPTV. It was «a great pope» who truly left us an «important message», that of «helping the needy, the poor,» he added. «We came with our eldest son for the canonization of Carlo Acutis, but we ended up at the pope’s funeral. It was very moving, a rare moment. We wanted to pass through a Holy Door, so we came to this one,» said Raphaël De Mas Latrie, a 45-year-old Frenchman who came to pay his respects with his family at the pope’s tomb.

A mass in honor of the pontiff, presided over by the former number two of the Vatican, Cardinal Parolin, was also celebrated on Sunday morning in Saint Peter’s Square, before the cardinals paid their respects at his tomb in the afternoon. According to Vatican rules, the conclave should open between the 15th and 20th day after the pope’s death, between May 5 and 10. </p>
