Two suspects will be brought before a judge on Monday in Meaux in connection with the fake marriage involving a Ukrainian girl. The alleged mastermind who played the role of the groom faces possible charges of fraud and breach of trust. The child did not suffer any physical or sexual violence.
The alleged mastermind behind a fake marriage at Disneyland Paris on Saturday, who played the role of the groom supposed to marry a child, will be brought before the Meaux court on Monday, where he risks being charged with fraud and breach of trust, the prosecutor said on Sunday.
He is an individual «likely of British nationality, whose identity has not yet been definitively established at this time», and is believed to be 22 years old. He played «the role of the groom after being professionally made up to display a completely different face from his own», said the prosecutor of Meaux, Jean-Baptiste Bladier, in his statement.
A Latvian national, 24 years old, who played the role of the bride’s sister at the event, will also be brought before the court on Monday. «Any offense against the minor being ruled out, the Meaux prosecutor’s office is considering charging these two individuals with fraud and breach of trust against Disneyland Paris, which has also filed a complaint in this regard,» the magistrate announced.
The authorities are still investigating the circumstances of the fake marriage organized early Saturday at the tourist complex privatized for the occasion, about thirty kilometers east of Paris, in Seine-et-Marne. The event caused a stir as the supposed bride was a 9-year-old Ukrainian girl and among the hundred extras, not everyone was aware that the wedding was not real, according to a police source.
The initial investigations, carried out «initially under the charge of violence against a minor under 15 and fraud,» revealed that «this +marriage+ was actually a fictitious ceremony intended to be privately filmed,» the prosecutor concluded. The young mastermind had «recruited, with the help of a Latvian citizen, other Latvian nationals to ensure the smooth running of the event, as well as a hundred French extras, falsely presented to Disneyland Paris as the wedding guests,» according to the prosecutor. The prosecutor emphasizes that the Ukrainian child, who arrived in France two days before the event, did not suffer «any physical or sexual violence» and «was not forced to play the role» of the bride.
According to the prosecutor, Disneyland Paris was deceived, «the organizer having impersonated a Latvian national and used fake documents to secure the privatization contract of the park.» The event was supposed to take place between 5:00 am and 7:00 am, outside of public opening hours, at a total cost of 130,000 euros, according to a police source. However, Disneyland Paris stated in a statement sent to AFP on Sunday that it was «immediately canceled» by its teams «after identifying significant irregularities.»
Four people in total were arrested. However, the custody of the mother of the girl, a 41-year-old Ukrainian, and a 55-year-old Latvian man was lifted on Saturday. It was this Latvian national who alerted the security at Disneyland Paris: he explained «having been hired to play, for 12,000 euros, the role of the bride’s father and discovering at the last moment that she was 9 years old,» the prosecutor said.
The two suspects will be presented to an investigating judge as part of the opening of a judicial investigation. The prosecutor will request their release on judicial supervision.
