In other countries, such as the United States, the current policy is less strict. Eighteen Americans returned in the night. One tested positive, while another showed symptoms. Both were taken to the hospital. The rest were transported to a highly specialized medical center in Nebraska for evaluation and testing before being allowed to return home, with isolation measures decided on a case-by-case basis. Authorities are trying to reassure the public. «The risk of hantavirus to the public remains very, very low. This variant does not transmit easily,» reassured Admiral Brian Christine, Deputy Secretary of Health in the United States.

In total, eight passengers from the Hondius are currently positive for hantavirus according to the WHO, representing six different nationalities.

At the University Hospital of Frankfurt (Germany), Dr. Timo Wold explains that they do not have the results yet and are carefully monitoring all close contacts. The hospital is following strict protocols for quarantine and testing, even for asymptomatic individuals, in line with the stringent measures implemented by countries like Spain, Germany, Greece, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland, which require a 42-day quarantine period.

The situation in the 22 other countries with passengers on the MV Hondius cruise ship varies. Each country has its own policy in place, with some being more stringent than others. The ship is being prepared for disinfection and will be heading towards the Netherlands under the captain, Jan Dobrogowski’s, supervision. Passengers and crew have been repatriated to their respective countries with extreme caution, following guidelines set by the World Health Organization.

The MV Hondius is docked in Tenerife (Spain), with passengers disembarking and being lined up on the quay, maintaining distance from each other. The crew has shown unity and strength throughout this crisis, with the captain expressing gratitude for their courage and dedication in these challenging times.

It is crucial for each country to implement and enforce effective policies to prevent the spread of the hantavirus. Regular testing, quarantine measures, and careful monitoring of close contacts are essential to mitigate the risk of transmission. As the situation continues to evolve, it is important for authorities to stay vigilant and prioritize public health and safety.
