Trump critique certains alliés de l’OTAN pour leur inaction

L’OTAN, selon Donald Trump : «des alliés lâches», «un tigre de papier». La crise dans le détroit d’Ormuz ne fait qu’augmenter le ressentiment du président américain. Il pointe du doigt les mauvais élèves.
Parmi eux, l’Espagne du socialiste Pedro Sánchez, opposé à la guerre en Iran, pas assez solidaire. Donald Trump menace de l’exclure de l’OTAN pour avoir refusé de mettre ses bases à disposition des États-Unis. Dans les faits, les statuts de l’Alliance ne permettent pas une telle sanction, et les Espagnols refusent de céder. «La position de l’Espagne est claire, collaboration entière avec les alliés, mais toujours dans le cadre des lois internationales», affirme Pedro Sánchez, Premier ministre espagnol.
Autre pays menacé de punition, le Royaume-Uni, allié pourtant historique. Le travailliste Keir Starmer refuse lui aussi de se laisser entraîner dans la guerre, malgré un chantage aux représailles commerciales.
L’OTAN plie, mais ne rompt pas. Et selon Emmanuel Macron, également objet des piques de son homologue américain, c’est à l’Europe de réinventer l’Alliance atlantique. Il l’a répété samedi 25 avril en Grèce. «On nous secoue aujourd’hui un peu en menaçant tel ou tel. La leçon qu’on doit en tirer : ne soyons plus dépendants. On doit investir davantage, mais nous, Européens, on doit renforcer ce pilier européen de l’OTAN, on doit renforcer cette Europe de la défense», déclare le président français.

Donald Trump threatens to exclude Spain from NATO for refusing to make its bases available to the United States. In reality, the statutes of the Alliance do not allow for such a sanction, and the Spaniards refuse to give in. «Spain’s position is clear, full collaboration with allies, but always within the framework of international law,» affirms Pedro Sánchez, the Spanish Prime Minister.
Another country threatened with punishment is the United Kingdom, a historic ally. The Labour leader Keir Starmer also refuses to be dragged into the war, despite the threat of commercial retaliation.
