In Germany, concern is growing after a series of hacks targeting the Signal messaging service. Accounts of political figures, military personnel, and journalists have been targeted. «At present, no one can say with certainty that the integrity of deputies’ communications is still guaranteed,» explained Konstantin von Notz, a Green Party member of the Bundestag and national security expert.
According to the weekly magazine Der Spiegel, at least 300 accounts of political figures have been compromised, including those of several left-wing deputies. The hackers used fake messages mimicking Signal support to gain access. For Berlin, the main supplier of military aid to Kyiv, Russia is the number one suspect, but the Kremlin denies it.
In France as well, last week, the National Agency for Secure Documents, which manages identity cards, was the victim of a hack. Nearly 12 million accounts are affected. Among the leaked data: name, address, date of birth, or phone number. Enough information to allow identity theft. «It can be reused for phishing, for all the scams you will receive by SMS, where you will be told: a package has been delivered with your address, your name, potentially several other personal information that make the attack more credible,» said Kevin Tellier, a cybersecurity researcher.
Attacks are becoming increasingly massive. In the first quarter of 2026, France is the second most affected country in the world by data leaks. Their cost could reach 12,000 trillion dollars, one of the main threats in the years to come.
