After experiencing it once going downhill, I said, «I will never do it downhill again because it is too dangerous,» added a cyclist.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office of Privas (Ardèche), several testimonies mention excessive speed. A team from France Télévisions was able to speak by phone with the mother of one of the young victims. The group of friends had come to spend two days in Ardèche. At the time of the accident, they were looking for a place to swim. They were all from the Lyon region.

«A group of friends who regularly gathered, who, from what I know, had known each other for a long time, and whose simple goal was to have a good time together. And who were tragically mowed down, while they had their whole lives ahead of them. They were really very, very good young people,» described Françoise Gherbezza, the mayor (SE) of Pusignan (Rhône). An investigation has been opened, with forensic investigations and toxicological analyses underway.

The day after the tragic accident that claimed the lives of five young people in Ardèche on Friday, May 1st, the circumstances of the tragedy are becoming clearer. The victims were from the Rhône region and had come to spend a few days of vacation with friends.

At the bottom of the ravine, next to the rest of the debris, a few white flowers have been laid. Further up the road, where the car tipped over the edge, residents gather in the afternoon of Saturday, May 2nd, all still very shocked by the tragedy. «My daughter is 20, she is 17, so those are the ages concerned,» a woman exclaimed.

Orange marks show the trajectory of the vehicle. Inside were four boys and a girl, aged 17 to 19. Approaching a curve, the car continued straight, fell 25 meters, and caught fire. The five occupants were found dead. Friends who were following in a second car raised the alarm.

They were all traveling on this winding little departmental road descending the Cance Valley, a road known to locals for its dangerousness. «Very narrow, so drive slowly, because the road doesn’t forgive a mistake,» commented a motorcyclist. «It’s a road that we, cyclists, usually take uphill and very rarely downhill. After doing it once downhill, I said, ‘I will never do it downhill again because it is too dangerous,’ added a cyclist.
