A French nun was violently assaulted in Jerusalem on Tuesday, April 28, near the place known as the tomb of David, on Mount Sion, adjacent to the Old City. «The sister (…) felt someone coming up behind her, and he threw her with all his might onto a stone,» said Olivier Poquillon, director of the French Biblical and Archaeological School of Jerusalem, where the 48-year-old Catholic nun works as a researcher. «As the sister lay on the ground, the man started kicking her.»
«An Israeli tourist intervened (…) by chance, the worst was avoided and the sister was only slightly injured but remains very shocked,» he added. A photo released by the Israeli police shows a large bruise on the victim’s temple.
A 36-year-old man was quickly arrested. He «was taken into custody for questioning (…), all possible motives are being examined,» according to a police statement, which refused to disclose the nationality of the suspect to AFP.
The French Consulate General in Jerusalem «strongly» condemned the attack, demanding that the perpetrator «be brought to justice for this act and that justice be served.»
«We strongly condemn this abhorrent attack,» also stated the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs, ensuring that «Israel remains firmly committed to protecting freedom of religion and worship for all faiths.»
The police said they intend to request an extension of the suspect’s custody. «We will closely follow the judicial proceedings both civilly and criminally,» added Olivier Poquillon.
La religieuse française a été violemment agressée à Jérusalem, projetée avec force sur une pierre par un individu. Elle a ensuite été frappée au moins une fois. L’agression s’est déroulée près du tombeau de David, sur le mont Sion, à Jérusalem. La sœur, âgée de 48 ans, chercheuse à l’Ecole biblique et archéologique française de Jérusalem, a été secourue par un touriste israélien qui a empêché le pire. Malgré quelques blessures légères, la religieuse reste profondément choquée par cet incident. Un homme de 36 ans a été arrêté et placé en garde à vue pour être interrogé. Les autorités examinent tous les mobiles possibles de l’agression. Le consulat général de France à Jérusalem a fermement condamné cet acte et demande que l’auteur soit traduit en justice.
La police israélienne a refusé de divulguer la nationalité du suspect. L’agression a suscité une vague de condamnations, y compris de la part du ministère des Affaires étrangères israélien, qui assure que la liberté de religion et de culte pour toutes les confessions est un engagement ferme d’Israël. La police prévoit de demander une prolongation de la garde à vue du suspect et suivra attentivement la procédure judiciaire tant au civil qu’au pénal. La religieuse française a été projetée violemment «de toutes ses forces sur une pierre» par un individu.
